Nemesio M. Pérez is a geochemist and volcanologist with more than 30 years of experience in volcanic gas geochemistry, volcanic monitoring, hydrogeology, and geothermal exploration. He conducted his PhD research at Louisiana State University (USA) under the supervision of Prof. Stanley N. Williams, focusing on volcanic gas geochemistry. He subsequently held a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship at Louisiana State University (1993–1994), where he conducted research on the hydrogeochemistry of oceanic volcanic islands with Prof. Jeff S. Hanor. From 1995 to 1996, he was a European Union Science and Technology Fellowship (STF) Researcher at the Laboratory for Earthquake Chemistry, University of Tokyo, where he collaborated with Prof. Hiroshi Wakita on the application of geochemical methods to earthquake and volcanic monitoring.

His research has been conducted in 24 countries across six continents, resulting in more than 150 scientific publications and participation in over 70 R&D and international cooperation projects. He is currently Scientist-in-Charge of the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (INVOLCAN) and Director of the Environmental Research Division at the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER).

In 2024, he was awarded the Christiaan Huygens Medal by the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions to soil-gas geochemistry in volcanic environments and his leadership in promoting international collaborative research programmes across Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa
