Giuseppe Etiope, petroleum geologist, is a Senior Researcher at INGV. He received his degree (1991) and his Ph.D. (1995) in Earth Sciences from the University of Rome La Sapienza. He works on gas origin, occurrence and migration in the geosphere, with particular reference to methane and other hydrocarbons. His main research is focused on origin and emission of natural gas into the atmosphere from geological sources (seeps, mud volcanoes, microseepage) with implications to petroleum exploration and global changes. He worked in the framework of EU research programmes on gas migration in the geosphere (PEGASUS and MIRAGE projects, Radioactive Waste Management) and development of submarine observatories (GEOSTAR 1-2, ORION, ASSEM). He coordinated NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) projects which allowed providing the first data and results on methane seepage and microseepage from mud volcanoes. Subsequent researchers on gas seepage, in collaboration with BP America and Colorado School of Mines, allowed to assess the first accurate global estimates of methane emissions into the atmosphere. In 2007 the results were acknowledged by the Fourth IPCC Assessment Report. In 2008-2009 the results become the main reference of EEA-EMEP/CORINAIR Emission Inventory Guidebook (Environmental European Agency) and the US EPA (the Federal Environmental Protection Agency) report on natural methane emission, which recognised geological sources as a new source category for the atmospheric methane budget. Global estimates of geo-emissions of propane and ethane are published in Science in 2009.He taught Petroleum Geology for Master courses at the Babes-Bolyai University (Cluj, Romania) where he is presently Associate Professor. He was a reviewer of European Commission and US National Science Foundation projects, and a referee of the 4th Assessment Report of IPCC. He is a member of the International Committe of “International Conference on Gas Geochemistry” and of the Best Paper Committee of Organic Geochemistry Division of the Geochemical Society. He published 116 articles, 72 of them in “peer-reviewed” journals.
